In this 2-part module we review the structure behind commercial paper conduits and structured investment vehicles, and the motivations behind their establishment. We also discuss the rating agency approach to rating these vehicles, and some of the accounting and regulatory issues that relate to them. We conclude by explaining why some of these vehicles, particularly the SIVs, performed so poorly during the financial meltdown and assess whether their business model may survive in the future.
